My Watercolour Journey

Art is something that you get better at the more you do it. What starts out feeling hard and frustrating becomes easier with practice. Like a lot of things, once you learn a few ‘tricks’, you often look back and wonder what the big deal was!

I’ve mostly used acrylics in my art. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but I think I understand acrylic most of the time now - I kind of know what it’s going to do, and I’m comfy using it. Watercolours are a very different story. Watercolour and I are still developing our relationship. We don’t really know each other very well yet, and as much as we want to trust each other, we’re just not there .. yet. I’m trying to find just 10 minutes every day to practice in my sketchbook and develop my style and confidence.

Sometimes I use watercolour postcards instead of my sketchbook and send these little creations to friends and family. Sometimes people send their own created postcard back to me! The “postcard project” makes me feel so happy - it’s so special to know that receiving this little gift in the mail has brought a smile to their face! There should definitely be more unexpected art arriving in the post :)

Have you ever documented a ‘process’ using art? I spent many, many hours creating a “shiny mud dumpling” (Japanese Dorodango ball) from dirt and clay only to knock it off the bookshelf while cleaning and watch it shatter all over the floor. I was so sad. Telling the story with art helped me feel less sad. Try it! It’s so therapeutic!
